In this design, I wanted to reinvent what I had made previously so that it was more modern, more beautiful, and just generally better. I have taken ideas from other designs where necessary to create something that I believe would truly function well, so enjoy. I have created this as a pitch towards Canonical that they have a great opportunity starting with a blank slate.
I'm not a fan of the boxes/background behind the icons because I think that it adds unnecessary visual clutter, but this is consistent with the Ubuntu desktop, so this is a criticism of them more than you. I like the swipe left for applications (although having the option to switch for left handers would be nice too), I like the attachment of the notifications to the application involved, but it would be nice to see the counters on the main screen also (how would dismissal of notifications and closing of applications work? Overlapping gestures could result in user confusion). The search bar placement just feels weird to me, and could be replaced with a button, and there is a lot of empty space on the home screen. If however this is meant to act like an overlay like in your previously concept, then I can see the reason for the empty space. As a response to this I did a quick sketch: [link]
Overall there are some fresh ideas and a clear direction with this design, which is often lacking in many. I look forward to more.
I definitely agree about the boxes. This was purely for consistency, and also I believe it's more a problem with icon design (one that Apple has somewhat solved.)When icons are consistent on their own, those boxes can go. If I were to code this UI I would add a 'mirror' like functionality to switch it all around, again, that's down to Canonical making it consistent in the desktop too. With all due respect, it was a personal preference to have 'blank space' on the homescreen. Much like a desktop wallpaper, I would have it this way purely for personalisation. Sometimes it's refreshing to have empty space to see something, without having to open up the gallery to view it. As for the search, I actually had the exact same idea when thinking about the desktop just earlier! So I definitely agree, and it's only an overlay annyway. I knew I'd forgotten something - badges should be on those icons when not in multitask/notification view, sorry ha. The multitask/notification combination is fairly new, so forgive my implementation, it's more food for thought so others can improve on it, and I would love it if you did. As for me, I haven't got a lot of UI design background or experience (knowing Photoshop doesn't count!), this is purely a result of me wanting to make a difference - but I do hope to continue designing more UI stuff. Thank you for your response, I am humble to say I admire your work and am chuffed to even have a response from you. I shall consider what you've said and modify it again when I have some time. Thanks spiceofdesign!
